Fast charging, long range, lots of torque: With the Taycan, Porsche presents a battery-powered sports car that can do many things better than Tesla. That, however, has its price.

No sign of thunder. But there’s no doubt about Weissach that the weather is shining, because the only slightly camouflaged Taycan test vehicle (sales start later this year) threads itself out of the entrance of the Porsche development center into the traffic like an almost silent lightning. At full acceleration from a standing position for frail passengers even a certain risk of injury, because the brutal Anfahrkick tackles the spine with vehemence to the backrest, and the headrest must earn their name repeatedly to the new. Who wants to live the full torque at every opportunity without warning, should not be surprised if the passengers spread wide in the seat, instead of enjoying the ride in the zero-emission Porsche relaxed.

There is a great deal different in the just under € 150 000 expensive E-Porsche, a four-door sports coupe without filters and soft focus. “The spontaneous development of power is a big plus of the e-principle,” says Project Manager Stefan Weckbach. “The drive works almost instantaneously without the propshaft, angle drive and multi-speed gearbox, and the turbo has two electric machines on board, each of which precisely controls each wheel individually – our credo is zero percent loss, 100 percent dynamic efficiency.” Weckbach is also 100 percent convinced of his creation: “This car moves in a different league – without typical vulnerabilities such as temperature problems, early performance degradation and fantasy ranges.”

The Taycan is a completely new developed Porsche-Ownkreation, which starts with the claim to do everything better than the Tesla ahead of his time. While many manufacturers store the batteries monolithically in the underbody en bloc, in Weissach they opted for a topographical flat-floor architecture with recessed foot wells in front of the seats. This constructive trick was the key to the athletic-elegant silhouette that is indispensable from the point of view of the brand-name guard. The slightly more uncomfortable sitting position in the rear and the tighter headroom was accepted in favor of the better aerodynamics and the attractive design. 2021 debuts as a second variant of the Sport Cross, a mix of coupe, station wagon and SUV.

The Taycan turbo is in many ways the most extreme electric car so far. It charges – assuming the appropriate infrastructure – at 800 volts with up to 250 kilowatts, also recuperates with a maximum of 250 kW, makes the engines turn 16 000 tours and mobilized in ten seconds available overboost mode, a maximum torque of 1000 Newton meters. The 96- kilowatt battery pack powers two top-end models with 160 kW (front axle) and 300 kW (rear axle). The sprint from zero to 100 lasts no more than three seconds, tempo 200is reached in less than ten seconds. Comment by the development manager: “We are particularly proud of the exact feedback from the direct steering and the seamless transition from electrical to hydraulic deceleration.”

The project costs of 800 million euros include new production facilities at the Zuffenhausen headquarters, which are initially designed for 60,000 units per year. In addition to the turbo and the turbo S Porsche sends two more variants into the race: In the base model for about 90 000 € takes a smaller battery pack with 80 kWh, the power supply of 240 to 280 kW electric motor, which drives only the rear wheels. After two hours of fast highway driving, the Taycan’s multifunction display displays 44 percent charge and 190 kilometers of range.
